Damon Galgut’s The Promise wins 2021 Booker Prize

Recommended for Middle Grades

South African author Damon Galgut has won the prestigious 2021 Booker Prize for his novel The Promise.

What is the Booker Prize?

The Booker Prize for Fiction is a prestigious literary prize awarded each year for the best original novel written in the English language and published in the United Kingdom. The award comes with a cash prize of £50,000.

Galgut published his first novel in 1982 at the age of 17. Since then, he has written many plays and novels. He was also earlier nominated for the Booker Prize in 2003 and 2010.

The Promise

The Promise is Galgut’s 9th and latest novel. The story follows the decline of one South African family over four decades from the apartheid era to the present day. Apartheid is the former official government policy of South Africa where they separated people of different races and made them live apart.

Galgut was one of six writers to be shortlisted for this year’s Booker Prize. The others include Anuk Arudpragasam for A Passage North, Patricia Lockwood for No One Is Talking About This and Nadifa Mohamed for The Fortune Men.

Last year, Scottish author Douglas Stuart won the award for his novel Shuggie Bain.
