Delhi pollution

As air quality gets worse, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) in the Delhi-NCR (National Capital Region) has issued a few orders. All educational institutions, including schools and colleges, should be closed till further notice.

What is the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM)?

The CAQM is a body under the Union Environment Ministry. It oversees measures to curb air pollution in Delhi-NCR, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.

It has also said that there be a halt on all construction activities till 21 November. But work related to the Railways, the Metro, the airport, bus terminals and defence-related projects will be allowed to continue.

Moreover,  50% of staff in government offices will work from home till 21 November. CAQM is also encouraging private companies to allow 50% of their workers to work from home till then. This is also a request to neighbouring states, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Rajasthan.

Trucks, other than those carrying essential supplies, will also not be allowed entry into Delhi till 21 November. After this date, they will decide what to do next.

Steps to stop Delhi pollution

The CAQM has also said that the government should use methods such as anti-smog guns, water sprinkling and dust suppressants in places where the air pollution is the worst.

The Delhi government is also working to hire private buses which run on cleaner CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) fuel for one month. This will encourage more people to use public transport instead of their own vehicles.
