Desert rock turns out to be a 4.6 billion-year-old meteorite
Recommended for Middle Grades
In 2010, people found an old rock in the deserts of the Sahara. It turns out that the rock is about 4.6 billion years old. Scientists say that the meteorite fell almost 2 years after the formation of the Solar System. It is in fact, even older than Earth itself.
It’s an object from space, such as a small rock or a metal piece, that hits the earth’s surface. What is a meteorite?
Moreover, usually, the meteorites that fall to Earth are made of a certain volcanic rock called Basalt. But this meteorite they found in the Sahara is made of a different type of rock.
What type of rock is this ancient meteorite?
A French scientist named Jean Alix Barratt, says that this rock found in the Sahara is the most fantastic new meteorite that he has ever seen. He says that it is a type of rock called andesite. And it is mostly found in subduction zones on Earth. A subduction zone is a big crash zone formed by the collision of tectonic plates present under the earth’s surface.
