Did Maoris discover Antarctica first, 1300 years ago?

Antarctica is Earth’s southernmost continent. It contains the South Pole and is surrounded by the Southern or Antarctic Ocean. Additionally, Antarctica is the coldest, driest, and windiest continent on average. So, many people do not live there. In fact, mostly only scientists live there.

We have read in history books that people from Western countries were the first to discover Antarctica in the 19th century.

However, a new study says that this may be wrong. It says that New Zealand’s indigenous (native) Maori people may have been the first to see or discover Antarctica.

The Maoris were famous for making journeys across the ocean. They had excellent skills to find their way by studying the stars, long before Europeans could. So, they may have travelled to Antarctica during the 7th century (about 1300 years ag0).

The study’s findings come from stories and history that the Maoris have even today. Experts have found a lot of writings that they have not studied properly before.

This new study is another example of how world history has overlooked the achievements of native people across the world.
