Dutch museum is the first in the world to display its entire collection

Recommended for Middle Grades

The Boijmans Van Beuningen is a museum in Rotterdam, Netherlands. On 5 November, it became the first museum in the world to display its entire collection to the public.

Why is this unusual? Because all big museums generally display only a small portion of their collection to the public. And they keep the rest in storage. The display is usually designed by a curator and when the public sees them, it follows a story or script. However, now in the case of Boijmans Van Beuningen museum, one will be free to see any art and make your own “discovery”.

The art pieces are located in a huge mirrored, bowl-shaped depot attached to the museum. It has about 151,000 artworks by many famous artists including Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet. Here, you can not only enjoy the art but you can also get to watch the museum staff actively restoring, repackaging, and transporting the art.

The art pieces are kept in five different temperature zones across the museum. This is important to preserve different types of artwork. So, you can view the art according to this, rather than by the time period, type of art or the place where it came from.
