Do you like to eat momos? Momos is a popular street food famous in the Himalayan region and across the Indian subcontinent.
Momo is a dish native to Tibet. Countries like Bhutan, Nepal as well as Indian states like Ladakh, Sikkim, Darjeeling (in West Bengal), etc also have their own style of making momo.
Fun facts about Momos!
- Momo is the colloquial (popular) form of the Tibetan word “mog mog”. The name refers to filled buns or dumplings.
- Most of the time, white flour dough is used to make the outer covering of momos.
- Small flat circles are made from the dough. Then they are filled with different kinds of fillings and made into a half-moon shape. Then you put them in a special tool and steam them.
- Prepare the fillings in advance using a variety of ingredients, such as cabbage, onions and soy sauce. Other options include chicken, paneer and pork.
- Momo is typically served with a chutney, which is a dipping sauce composed of tomatoes, garlic, and hot chillies.
- Traditional steamed momo and deep-fried momo are the two most common varieties.
- Despite this, you can also obtain tandoori-style and chocolate-coated momos these days.
- Like the Chinese dim sum, the Korean Mandu, and so on, several countries have their own versions of dumplings.
