Ramen is a very popular noodle soup in Japan. In this dish, boiled noodles are served in different flavoured soup with many toppings.
- The dish actually originated in China during the 19th century.
- There are two main components in Ramen – noodles and soup.
- Noodles are generally made with wheat flour and kansui (an alkaline solution). They are called Chukamen.

- There are three basic types of ramen soups. They are shoyu (soy sauce), miso (bean paste) and shio (salt).
- The base of the soup is prepared using pork, chicken or seafood broth.
- The soup is then seasoned with soy sauce, miso or salt.
- There are millions of ramen restaurants in Japan.
- Many regional specific ramens is also available in Japan. They differ in texture and flavours of broth, soup, toppings and noodles.
The packet, instant noodles that we eat often like, like Maggi or Top Ramen, are also distantly related to ramen. They have been developed so that people who don’t have time can also enjoy a quick meal.
