Eric Khumalo creates free online coding classes

Recommended for Middle Grades

Eric Khumalo, a young man from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe created free online coding classes for the youth of his home country.

He was inspired after attending an introductory coding and computer science class in Berkeley. Now, he is recreating the same experience for the youth of his home country.

Eric Khumalo started the coding program for his country youth and named it “Emzini WeCode”. The program began with classroom teaching where he taught the local students of Zimbabwe. Now,  the program has developed such that they are hosting online classes for more than 1,000 students.

The idea of the coding classes

Eric Khumalo said that he was inspired by one of his professors. He said that the professor shared about his journey and the way he learned coding when he was a kid. His journey motivated Eric Khumalo and he started his own program to educate the youth about computer coding.

In his words, coding has the power to create and solve all kinds of problems. Adding to it, we can find the solutions through computer science.
