Eta Aquarid Meteor Shower 2022!

Recommended for Middle Grades

During the month of May, meteors from the Eta Aquarid meteor shower can be seen streaking through the nighttime sky.

What is a meteor shower?

An astronomical occurrence in which a large number of meteors are observed to radiate or originate from a single place in the night sky is referred to as a meteor shower.

What is Halley's Comet?

Halley’s Comet is possibly the most well-known comet in the history of the planet. Last seen in 1986, it is expected to reappear in 2061, according to projections.

It is one of two yearly showers caused by pieces of Halley’s Comet that appear each year. The other is the Perseid meteor shower. Their name derives from the fact that they appear to be located in a “radiant” position in the constellation Aquarius.

Interesting facts about the Eta Aquarid meteor shower!

  • The Eta Aquarid meteor shower appears in the night sky in May. It is one of two yearly showers created by fragments of Halley’s Comet.
  • The shower is most active between late April and mid-May, with its heaviest activity occurring in early May.
  • The meteors are a stream of debris left behind by Comet Halley, which is the most renowned periodic comet.
  • Just before dawn is the greatest time to look since there is the least amount of light from the moon that will interfere with your vision.
  • The meteors do not truly originate in the constellation of Aquarius; rather, the placement of the radiant in that constellation is an orbital coincidence that only directs skywatchers to the precise location in the sky.
