Ethiopia declares state of emergency
Recommended for Secondary Grades
On Tuesday, 2 November, Ethiopia declared a six-month state of emergency. This is after forces from the northern region of Tigray are believed to be coming close to Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia.
Two days earlier, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed had urged citizens to take up arms to defend themselves against the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
The TPLF says it has captured several towns and is about 380 km away from the capital. And the Ethiopian government has said that violating the emergency would face three to 10 years in prison.
The United Nations as well as many countries’ leaders have expressed concern over the situation.
The Tigray War in Ethiopia
This is an ongoing civil war that began just before midnight on 3 November 2020 in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia. The war is between the Special Forces of the Tigray Regional government and the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) who is helped by other state forces.
In 2018, after many years of conflict, current PM Abiy Ahmed had established a new government and merged many different parties under one. However, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) refused to join the new government. After that, Ahmed had postponed general elections scheduled for 29 August 2020 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Then the TPLF said that his government was illegal and declared war.
As the civil war rages, there is a huge humanitarian crisis in the country and both sides have been accused of war crimes. Millions of people had to flee their homes.
