European Union takes measures against Russia amidst Ukraine war
European Union (EU) President Ursula von der Leyen said that the measures taken are for maximising the pressure on Russia and to minimise the damage to Europe.
- The European Union is focusing for weeks to wean off Russian oil and gas.
- They have already pledged to reduce gas imports by two-thirds by the end of 2022.
- Russian crude oil will be banned in the EU within six months.
- Moreover, refined products will also be banned in the EU by the end of 2022.
- The European Union has also announced that sanctions would be imposed on military officers involved in war crimes in Bucha and Mariupol.
- A ban will be imposed on providing European services to Russian companies through lawyers, accountants and doctors.
The EU president said that the Russian oil will be banned in an orderly way, such that the EU and its neighbours get the time to find alternate sources to minimize the global markets. These measures have to be approved by EU ambassadors and then will be signed in the upcoming days.
