Father of the Indian Nuclear Programme – Homi J Bhabha

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Dr Homi Jehangir Bhabha (Homi J Bhabha) was an Indian nuclear physicist (scientist) and a professor of physics. He is also known as the “Father of the Indian Nuclear Programme”.

In the 1940s, most people in India didn’t have electricity in their homes. So, it was Dr Bhabha’s vision to provide India with nuclear power as a source of affordable energy to the public.

His work and vision paved the way for the setting up of India’s first nuclear power plant in 1969. This is the Tarapur Atomic Power station and it is still running today. It provides electricity to the area around Mumbai.

Moreover, he was the founding director of the Atomic Energy Establishment, Trombay (AEET). This was renamed the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre after him, in his honour.

Dr Bhabha was born on 30 October 1909 into a wealthy industrial Parsi family. He was well educated and his father wanted him to join the family’s steel business. But he had other interests. He wanted to study mathematics and nuclear physics.

During his time at college in Cambridge, UK, many scientists were making important discoveries. It was a very exciting time in the field of science. Nuclear physics was attracting the greatest minds. So, Dr Bhabha also became very interested in the field.

Dr Homi J Bhabha’s lifelong passion was conducting experiments on particles that also released huge amounts of radiation.

For his many scientific achievements, he received the Adams Prize (1942) and Padma Bhushan (1954). Moreover, he was also nominated for the Nobel Prize for Physics in the 1950s.

Dr Homi J Bhabha died near Mont Blanc, Italy on 24 January 1966. But his legacy is not forgotten and he continues to inspire many scientists today.

Was he in the time of Albert Einstien
If he was, was he older or younger
Or was he not even in that time

      Dear Sanaa

Interesting question and we missed it.

Einstein was born on 4th March 1879 and died on 18th April 1955. While Homi Bhabha was born on 30th October 1909 and died on 24 January 1966. To answer your question, they were around at the same time.
Homi Bhabha was younger than Albert Einstein.

      Stay curious!
