The UN Security Council
On 4 January, India, Mexico, Norway, Ireland and Kenya formally joined the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). This is India’s 8th time as a member of the UNSC.
These countries were selected last year. Their term began from 1 January 2021 and they will part of the UNSC for two years as non-permanent members.
Flags of the five new members were installed at the Security Council headquarters in New York, US.
The UN Security Council is one of the six main organs of the United Nations. It is responsible for the maintenance of international peace and security.
The UNSC consists of fifteen members. Out of these, five are permanent members – Russia, the UK, France, China, and the US. The remaining 10 non-permanent members are elected on a regional basis and serve two-year terms.
