Football: Sunil Chhetri reaches record-breaking goal tally

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Sunil Chhetri is the current captain of the Indian men’s football team. Yesterday, he became the second-highest active goal scorer, in international football.

He scored 2 goals against Bangladesh in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. India won the match 2-0. This was also India’s first win in World Cup qualifiers away from home in 20 years. India can no longer qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. But they can still qualify for the Asian Cup in China in 2023.

This means, Chhetri now has 74 goals in international football. Now, he is only behind Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo (103) in the active (still playing) international goal-scorers list.

Ali Mabkhout of the UAE (United Arab Emirates) is third on the list with 73 goals to his name. The fourth is Argentina’s Lionel Messi (72 goals).

Chhetri is now just a goal away from entering world football’s all-time top-10.

Sunil Chhetri is the all-time top goalscorer of the Indian national football team. He also captains Indian Super League side Bengaluru FC.
