Gamma-ray bursts can release more energy

Gamma-ray bursts can release more energy in 10 seconds than our Sun

Recommended for Middle Grades

Gamma-ray bursts are very energetic and bright events. They are the strongest and brightest explosions in the universe. In fact, gamma-ray bursts can release more energy in 10 seconds than our Sun will emit in its entire 10-billion-year expected lifetime!

What is a gamma-ray?

A gamma-ray or gamma radiation is a form of electromagnetic radiation.

Gamma rays have the shortest wavelengths and also the most energy of any wave within the spectrum. Scientists believe that they are generated when black holes form. They are also believed to be caused by the merger of two neutron stars.

On Earth, nuclear explosions and reactions as well as lightning can generate gamma waves.

Gamma-rays are capable of killing living cells. Today, we use them in medicine to kill cancerous cells in the body.

Electromagnetic effects

Sudden gamma-ray bursts present scientists with distinctive opportunities to explore them. By exploring the universe through these high energies, scientists can search for new physics. They can also test theories and carry out experiments that are not possible in laboratories on Earth.

If we could see gamma rays, the night sky would look strange. Ever-changing bursts of high-energy gamma radiation would replace the familiar view of constantly shining constellations. They would last fractions of a second to minutes, popping like cosmic flashbulbs, momentarily dominating the gamma-ray sky and then fading.
