Today, on 16 August, Google Doodle honours the life and achievements of Subhadra Kumari Chauhan.

She was a courageous poet and freedom fighter who fought for India’s freedom. Born in 1904, today is the poet’s 117th birth anniversary.

She was the first woman satyagrahi to court arrest in Nagpur. Moreover, she went to jail twice (in 1923 and 1942) for participating in protests against British rule. A satyagrahi is someone who practices satyagraha – a form of nonviolent resistance or civil resistance.

The Google Doodle shows her image, sitting with a pen and paper, in a saree. A New Zealand-based artist named Prabha Mallya created the doodle.

Subhadra Kumari Chauhan

Chauhan used her poetry to call others to fight for India’s freedom and independence. Her works focused on the hardships that Indian women faced, such as gender and caste discrimination. During her lifetime, she published a total of 88 poems and 46 short stories.

One of her most famous works is the poem Jhansi ki Rani. It is about the life of Rani Lakshmi Bai. The poem is one of the most recited and sung poems in Hindi literature.

Who was Rani Lakshmi Bai?

Lakshmibai, the Rani of Jhansi was the queen of the Maratha princely state of Jhansi. She was one of the leading figures of the Indian Rebellion of 1857. She also became a symbol of resistance to the British Raj for Indian nationalists.
