Government launches campaign to promote Eat Right India movement

Government launches campaign to promote Eat Right India movementDr Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, launched a social and mass media campaign on the Eat Right India movement, last week. This campaign is in collaboration with the World Health Organisation(WHO).

Dr Vardhan said that the country is in need of a ‘Jan Andolan’ (mass movement) on preventive and promotive health.
 	India is seeing a rise of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and heart diseases, etc. Eating right is a way to combat this.
 	He also launched a new Eat Right India logo, an online Eat Right Quiz, the Eat Right Online Course for frontline health workers and the Eat Right India Store featuring merchandise to nudge right eating habits.

FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) will helm (manage) the Eat Right India movement.

This movement is a crucial preventive healthcare measure which aims to bring about change through a mix of regulatory measures and awareness.
 	It is aligned with other government public health programmes such as POSHAN Abhiyaan, Anemia Mukt Bharat, Ayushman Bharat Yojana and Swachh Bharat Mission.

FSSAI's regulatory measures come under three major pillars: Eat Safe, Eat Health and Eat Sustainably.

Some measures include a prescribed limit for Total Polar Compounds (TPC) at 25% in cooking oil. This will help avoid the harmful effects of reused cooking oil.
 	FSSAI has also improved standards for food staples like wheat flour, rice, oil, milk and salt as well as for other items like health supplements, etc.
 	Promoting sustainability, FSSAI also has removed the restriction on the use of returnable bottles and is promoting the use of bamboo instead of plastics.
