Bicycling and staying healthy!
Recommended for Foundational Grades
Cycling has the power to keep one more than just healthy. People in India are soon going to be as good as they are in other places. It’s been a popular way for people to stay in shape and find new adventures. No wonder “Bicycling and staying healthy” go together!
History of Bicycle
The bicycle was first introduced in India by the British. A German named Karl Von Drais had invented it in 1817.
- Karl Von Drais called his newly invented bicycle the ‘running machine’ or the ‘hobby horse’.
- The hobby horse had 2 large wheels and a steering handlebar.
- This machine was invented so that people could use something other than horses.
Over the next 60 years, the look of the bicycle changed many times. By 1884, the ‘Penny-farthing ‘ bicycle had one large front wheel and a much smaller rear wheel.
By this time the British were ruling in India and wanted to sell the things they made in Indian markets. Meanwhile, the bicycle had changed again and now the size of both the wheels was similar.
BSA Cycles
British manufacturers such as BSA started selling bicycles to India in large numbers.
- In the late 1800s, bicycles were only found in hill stations in India.
- Slowly, more and more people started using them in all cities.
- At first, only men were allowed to use it. However, later, women could also use them.
- Soon, bicycle use became very popular among the common people.
Cycling Groups – Bicycling and staying healthy!
Many cyclists begin their cycling adventures by going on short, social rides, but quickly find themselves arranging trips to the Himalayas or long, multi-day rides. When they’re at their limitations, it’s their fellow riders who keep them motivated, hydrated, and backed up by a sweep vehicle.
Getting up at 5 am to meet your pals for breakfast rides instead of 9 pm to drink adds to one’s social life. In a riding group, there is an entirely new level of friendship.
So, what are you waiting for? Begin your cycling journey today!
