World’s oldest parliament
Iceland is a small island nation in Europe. It is Europe’s westernmost country and home to the world’s northernmost capital, Reykjavik. Ice covers about 11% of the country.
Iceland has a parliamentary system like India. The president is the head of state, while the prime minister serves as the head of government in a multi-party system. The current president is Guðni Thorlacius Jóhannesson while the prime minister is Katrín Jakobsdóttir.
The Althing (or Alþingi) is the national parliament of Iceland. The first assembly of the Althing was convened in Iceland in 930. It is the oldest surviving parliament in the world.
Iceland came into existence more than 1,000 years ago. It was during the Viking age of exploration. A mixture of Norse and Celtic people settled there.
Iceland today
Today, Iceland is among the most homogeneous nations on Earth. This means, almost the entire population shares a similar history or culture. Researchers have used Iceland’s inhabitants to study hereditary problems and diseases and develop cures.
