IMD to forecast water-level rise in all dams, river basins

Recommended for Secondary Grades

The monsoon season is the season when it rains a lot in Southern Asia, including India.

How many monsoon seasons does India have?

There are two monsoons in India. One is the summer monsoon season (or the southwest monsoon) lasts from June to September and affects the whole of India. The second is the northeast or winter monsoon which brings seasonal rainfall to Southeast India from October to December.

During the monsoon, due to the heavy rains, floods happen quite regularly. Rivers and dams also overflow. This causes a problem in water management.

From this year, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) plans to provide estimates of the possible increase and availability of water levels in river basins and reservoirs. This will help in better water management.

The IMD will provide forecasts (predictions) of water levels every month during the monsoon between June and September.

IMD has already started these services for a few reservoir basins. But, starting this year, they will extend it to all rivers and reservoirs. In India, the Central Water Commission monitors the water levels of 130 reservoirs.

New website

Apart from the above information on the monsoon, the IMD also recently launched a website containing all the data on weather and climate that it has collected over the last 100 years. This data can be accessed by forecasters, researchers, students and the general public.
