Incandescent light bulbs phased out of production
Recommended for Preparatory Grades
In the United States, the Department of Energy has issued new rules regarding the production of incandescent light bulbs. The production and sale of these bulbs will be discontinued in the United States of America.
What is incandescent light bulb?
An incandescent light bulb or lamp is an electric light with a thin wire which is heated until it glows. It is enclosed in a glass bulb with a vacuum to protect the filament.
The electricity causes the wire to heat and as a result, it glows.
New rules by the Department of Energy
The new rules state that the bulbs should have a minimum efficiency of 45 lumens per watt. Whilst the average incandescent bulb produces 15 lumens per watt. Another rule says that this move will expand energy-efficiency requirements to more types of light bulbs.
According to the Department of Energy, this step should cut carbon emissions by 222 million metric tons over the next 30 years.
As per the DOE (Department of Energy), an incandescent bulb or lamp lasts only about 1,000 hours while LED products last about 30,000 to 50,000 hours.
Effects of phasing out incandescent light bulbs
The lighting industry embracing more energy-efficient products. This measure will accelerate the progress in delivering the best products to American consumers and build a better and bright future. This step will also save $3 million per year on utility bills.
