India’s first manned ocean mission
Under this project, India aims to send three people into the deep sea (upto a depth of 6 km) in the Indian Ocean. They will do so in an indigenous (India-made) deep-sea vehicle called Matsya 6000. This can stay under the sea for 12 hours and an additional 96 hours in case of an emergency situation.
Officials said that Matsya 6000 will be ready for trials by December 2024. But before that, they will conduct trials in shallow waters too.
The Samudrayaan project aims to conduct deep-ocean exploration of minerals and metals. Scientists will study the area and collect samples.
