India to hold first-ever online Quad Summit with the US, Japan, Australia

Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the first-ever online Quad Summit. This summit is a meeting of the top leaders of India, Japan, Australia and the US.

The meeting will have US President Joe Biden, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga. It will also be attended by US Vice-President Kamala Harris.

This is the first meeting of the top leaders of the Quadrilateral alliance of the four countries. It is known as the ‘Quadrilateral Security Dialogue‘.

This alliance aims to counter China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific region. Expected topics of discussion will be the COVID-19 vaccine, fighting the pandemic and cooperation to maintain peace in the Indo-Pacific region.

Other discussions

Another topic of discussion will be reducing dependence on China-produced rare earth minerals. China is the largest producer of rare earth minerals. They are used in rechargeable batteries for electric and hybrid cars, computers, and television.

The virtual quad summit is scheduled for 8.30 a.m. in Washington (US) and 7 p.m. in Delhi, 10.30 p.m. in Canberra (Australia) and 12.30 a.m. Saturday in Tokyo (Japan).
