Fun facts about Thar Dessert!

  • The Thar desert is partly located in Rajasthan (India) and Punjab and Sindh provinces (Pakistan). Thus it forms a natural boundary between India and Pakistan.
  • The word thul, from which the name Thar comes, means the area with sand ridges.
  • It is bordered on the west by the Indus River plain, on the north by the Punjab Plain, on the southeast by the Aravalli Range, and on the south by the Rann of Kutch.
  • The southwest monsoon winds don’t reach the Thar desert because of the Aravalli mountain range. Because of this, the weather in the Thar region is very hot.
