India’s fossil wealth – Hidden and maybe less sought!

Where are the dinosaurs?

Before we introduce our curious little munchkins to this story, we need to get some things clear.

First, dinosaurs existed a very long time ago. They seem very big, interesting, scary and as much as our kids, we love to play with dinosaur toys as well. But thank god, they are no longer with us. Waking up to a screaming mother is perfectly fine but not to the growls of a T-Rex.

Second, as curious as one can be, there are a lot of experts who study the history of our planet, what was living when and so on and so forth. Just by looking at bones buried or found at certain places, these experts figure out the age, structure, what the animals ate, etc. Isn’t that cool?

So, what’s next?

Well, as our little readers, you need to dream and aspire to be one of these experts. Who knows, you might discover a new animal species! As a country, we’ve had many discoveries in the past, the earliest whales, largest rhinos and elephants but experts feel there is a huge gap in India’s fossil wealth.

Wait, we forgot what’s a fossil? Simple, they are remains of animals in the forms of bones, skeletons, imprints etc. who may have lived very long ago.  So, basically, we need to discover more of these fossils and keep exploring. Ok, now is the right time for you little kids to meet your Uncle Ashok. He is extremely generous when we talk about India’s fossil wealth.

Kids, allow us to introduce you to Uncle Ashok!

Uncle Ashok’s been studying bones of animals and other cool stuff for the longest time ever. Not only that, his father and grandfather also did the same. A lot of interesting discoveries in India are safely placed in National History Museum for us to see. If our kids have been to this museum or ever do in future, let us know how cool was it.

India’s fossil wealth – More to do

Our experts in this field face basic challenges such as lack of space, labs, museums and money to say the least. Also, how many of us even think of becoming a “Paleontologist”? A tricky word for our little ones but that’s what we call a person who digs and studies old bones of ancient animals etc. Experts in this field also feel that a greater amount of trust and sharing between different countries could also help each one to build on knowledge.

At Curious Times we really hope to see some of our little ones wearing a cool hat, big boots and making exciting discoveries in our country.
