Inspirational Paralympian – Devendra Jhajhariya

As the Paralympic Games are going on, today, let’s learn about another inspirational Paralympian from India – Devendra Jhajhariya.

Devendra Jhajhariya is an Indian Paralympic javelin thrower. He is the first Indian Paralympian to win two gold medals at the Paralympics.

Devendra won his first gold medal in the javelin throw at the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece. After that, he won his second gold medal at the 2016 Paralympics Games held at Rio De Janerio in Brazil.

Devendra Jhajhariya is from Rajasthan. At the age of eight, he got injured when he touched a live electric cable and lost his left hand. However, this did not stop him from working hard towards his aims and today, he is a gold medal-winning Paralympian.

This inspirational Paralympian won his first gold medal in the 8th FESPIC Games in South Korea.

An organisation called Olympic Gold Quest currently supports him.

What is Olympic Gold Quest?

This is an organisation dedicated to helping Indian athletes become world-class athletes and win Olympic Gold medals.

Awards

Devendra was awarded the Arjuna Award in 2004 and with Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award in 2017. Moreover, in 2012, he became the first Paralympian to be rewarded the Padma Shri – truly an inspirational Paralympian.

Tokyo Paralympics

Australia and China are currently at first place on the Paralympic medal tally chart with 12 medals each. Russia stands in second place with 7 medals while India hasn’t won any medal yet.
