Today, let’s read about inspirational Paralympian Varun Singh Bhati.

Varun Singh Bhati is an Indian para high jumper and he competes in the high jump T-42 category.

At a very young age, Varun fell ill due to poliomyelitis and it affected his left leg. However, despite his disability, he participated in sports during his school days, and of course, still continues to do so.

What is poliomyelitis?

Polio (poliomyelitis) is a disease caused by three different strains of poliovirus (types 1, 2, and 3). Polio usually affects children under five years of age. It can kill or leave the patient partially or completely paralysed. There is no cure but the polio vaccine gives protection for life.

Varun Singh Bhati won a bronze medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio as well as the 2017 World Para Athletic Championship. Moreover, he made a record jump at the 2016 IPC Athletics Asia-Oceania Championship where he won a gold medal. Moreover, additionally, he also won a silver medal at the 2018 Asian Para Games where he recorded a jump of 1.82 meters.

This inspirational Paralympian won the Times of India Sports Award in 2017, given by the Times of India Group. He was also awarded the Arjuna Award in August 2018.
