Inspirational Space Station Women Engineers!

Recommended for Secondary Grades

Women who work for the International Space Station Program (ISS) are leaders and make a big difference in the success of the space lab. From programme management to research and task integration, they contribute to various workstreams.  Let’s meet three Inspirational Space Station Women Engineers.

It would be fascinating to find out how they got into engineering for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the space station. Hope our little readers get inspired by their stories.

Rebekah Anchondo

Rebekah Anchondo works in the Commercial Integration Office of the International Space Station Program. She has a degree in aerospace engineering and a Master’s degree in systems engineering.

Anchondo’s 12-year International Space Station engineering career began with a NASA contractor co-op internship. In 2019, she was hired by NASA to be the spacecraft design lead for the International Space Station. In this role, she coordinated system engineering and integration studies of future space station upgrades.

Early in high school, her love for math led her to become an engineer. She got a lot of support from her Mother. She guided Rebekah and advised her to visit different engineering courses. The purpose was to help Rebekah figure out what kind of engineering she might be interested in.

Suzanne Hansen

Suzanne Hansen is a manager of the Mission Evaluation Room (MER) in the On-Orbit Engineering Office of the International Space Station Program. She holds a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering.

As a student, Hansen worked for Boeing, which is the main contractor for ISS. After that, she worked for ISS full-time. She is accountable for leading a team of engineering disciplines. This includes experts on every major International Space Station system. They diagnose and troubleshoot issues onboard the space station. From computers to life support systems.

As a kid, she was inspired by the movie “Space Camp”. In college, she decided to pursue aerospace engineering.  She received a lot of motivation and a helping hand from her dad while growing up. Suzanne considers her dad to be her “hero”.

Amy Ross

Amy Ross is a Chief Engineer on the International Space Station, and she works there. Aerospace engineering is her favourite subject. She has a bachelor’s degree and an advanced degree in systems engineering, and she also has a degree in space studies.

Both her parents worked for the International Space Station. As a person with an engineering degree, Amy thinks there are a lot of different types of jobs that one could do. When she went to college, she knew that being an engineer was the best way to work at NASA.
