International Moon Day is celebrated with the intent to educate people, especially the younger generation, in the fields of astronomy and astrology. The Moon Village Association proposed the idea of celebrating International Moon Day.

What is the Moon Village Association?

The Moon Village Association was started in 2017 to make the Moon Village a real place. It gives everyone, even countries that don’t have their own space programmes, a chance to work together to reach this goal.

 The date was selected to honour the first time a human being set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969.

  • Mankind’s attempts to land on the moon were launched into space by the Soviet Union.
  • On September 14, 1959, it successfully touched down on the surface of the Moon.
  • Since that time, numerous nations, including Japan, China, the United States of America, India, and others, have carried out space missions to the Moon.
  • During the Apollo 11 mission carried out by the United States of America, Neil Armstrong was the first person to set foot on the moon
  • “Living in Space” is the theme for 2022. Its main purpose is to teach people how to explore and use the moon in an environmentally friendly way.

  • The moon has the second most mass of any natural satellite.
  • The Moon makes one trip around the Earth at a speed of 2300 kilometres per hour.
  • When a person goes to the moon, they lose about 16.5% of their body weight.
  • From Earth, we always see the same side of the moon because it spins at the same speed as Earth.
