Justice S.A. Bobde takes oath as new Chief Justice of India

Justice S.A. Bobde takes oath as new Chief Justice of IndiaJustice Sharad Arvind Bobde is officially the new Chief Justice of India (CJI).

He was formally sworn in today as the 47th Chief Justice of India by President Ram Nath Kovind in a ceremony held at the Durbar Hall of Rashtrapati Bhawan.
 	Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Former Vice President Hamid Ansari and former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and several senior ministers were present at the oath-taking ceremony.
 	Justice Bobde's tenure will be for around 17 months and he is due to retire on 23 April 2021.

He succeeds former CJI Ranjan Gogoi, who retired on 17 November 2019.

The Chief Justice of India (CJI) is the head of the judiciary of India and the Supreme Court of India.

Justice Bobde hails from Maharashtra and started his career as an advocate in 1978.

He has previously served as a judge at the Bombay High Court as well as Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court.
 	Justice Bobde was part of the 5-judge bench which gave the verdict on the Ayodhya matter recently.
 	He has also been part of other benches which have decided on issues like the issue of Aadhar card for availing government services, Right to Privacy, etc.
