The Indian Railways is currently building a rail bridge over the Chenab River in Jammu and Kashmir. This bridge, the Chenab Arch Bridge, is set to be the world’s highest rail bridge.

What is a rail bridge?

A rail or railway bridge is one that is designed and built to carry a railway track over a road, river, etc.

On Monday, the bridge’s arches were finally completed. The next step would be the laying of the tracks. The rail bridge is expected to be completed by December 2022.

This 1.3-kilometre-long bridge aims to provide connectivity to the Kashmir Valley. It is being constructed as part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL) project.

This rail bridge is being built 359 metres above the bed of the river. It is 35 metres higher than the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

The bridge has been designed to be a ‘blast proof’ bridge. It can also withstand earthquakes and strong winds.
