Kaziranga park rangers get special satellite phones to help protect animals
Recommended for Preparatory Grades
For the first time in India, park rangers at Assam’s Kaziranga National Park (KNP) will get to use special satellite phones. Satellite phones are phones that connect to each other through satellites.
The government gave the park officials 10 such satellite phones. It will help them fight poachers (hunters) who try to hunt animals in the park, especially rhinos.
What is the Kaziranga National Park (KNP)?
Kaziranga National Park is a national park in Assam, India. The national park is a World Heritage Site and home to two-thirds of the world’s great one-horned rhinoceroses. It was also declared a Tiger Reserve in 2006.
How will it help the park rangers?
KNP is a huge national park, spread over hundreds of kilometres in upper Assam. This means there are many forests and mobile phones don’t work in many places. So, satellite phones will be useful as they can work anywhere. This way, park rangers can speak to each other at any time, even if there is no mobile network.
As per the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), each phone costs about ₹16 lakh. Government telecom company BSNL will provide service for the phones and train the rangers to use them. They can also use the satellite phones to get help during other emergencies such as floods.
