Lagoon in Argentina turns bright pink in colour due to pollution

Pollution creates a pink lagoon
We have read about lakes turning pink before. Many times, they turn pink due to algae (tiny water plants).
Recently, the Corfo Lagoon in Argentina also turned bright pink in colour. However, this time, the cause of the colour is not natural.
What is a lagoon?
A lagoon is a water body separated from larger water bodies by a natural barrier.
So, what led to the change in the colour of the lagoon in Argentina? Experts say that the change in the colour of water is an effect of pollution. They said that the bright pink colour is due to an excess of a chemical called sodium sulphite.
They say that the chemical is from the waste thrown away by fish factories into the Chubut River.
Fish waste
There are fish factories near the Chubut River, which is where the Corfo lagoon is located. So, the dirty water from there also got into the Corfo Lagoon. Moreover, local residents around the lagoon also complained of foul smells. They say that the government is responsible for water pollution and for the poisoning of the natural environment.
