Today, let’s learn about Sir Isaac Newton (4 January 1643 – 31 March 1727).

Who was Isaac Newton?

Isaac Newton was an English mathematician, physicist, astronomer, theologian, and author. He is widely recognised as one of the most influential scientists of all time.

Sir Newton was born in Woolsthorpe, Lincolnshire, England. Originally, his mother wanted him to be a farmer but he instead pursued studies at Trinity College, Cambridge.

Newton’s Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica (Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy, 1687) is one of the most important single works in the history of modern science.

Isaac Newton’s achievements

  • In mechanics, his three laws of motion, the basic principles of modern physics, resulted in the formulation of the law of universal gravitation.
  • In mathematics, he was the original discoverer of infinitesimal calculus.
  • During his lifetime, Isaac Newton was a fellow of Trinity College. And the second Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge.
  • Moreover, he also served two brief terms as Member of Parliament for the University of Cambridge, in 1689–90 and 1701–02.
  • He was knighted by Queen Anne in 1705.

Sir Isaac Newton’s three laws of motion and universal gravitation are some of the most important scientific theories we learn today.
