Jayaprakash Narayan – Leading by example!

Today let us learn about Jayaprakash Narayan (JP). He was an important Indian independence activist, theorist, socialist and political leader.

Key facts about Jayaprakash Narayan!

  • He was born on 11 October 1902 in Patna, Bihar.
  • After finishing his higher studies, Mr Narayan joined the Indian National Congress in 1929.
  • He became a follower of Mahatma Gandhi and became a freedom fighter, leading the Quit India movement.
  • Mr Narayan also worked passionately for the Bhoodan Yajna Movement, which called for the distribution of land among the landless.
  • Even after Independence, he continued to work for what he believed in.
  • He led a campaign named ‘Total Revolution’ against the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the 1970s. The campaign also called ‘Sampoorna Kranti’ aimed to remove corruption and undemocratic principles of the government.
  • Mr Narayan received many awards for his work and contributions including, the Bharat Ratna and Magsaysay awards.

Mr Narayan passed away in Patna, Bihar on 8 October 1979. He is remembered for his courage and beliefs. One of his nicknames was Lok Nayak (Hindi for The People’s Leader), for his leadership and work.
