Today is an important day for India. Not only are we celebrating Gandhi Jayanti but we are also celebrating the 117th birthday anniversary of Lal Bahadur Shastri.

Lal Bahadur Shastri was the second Prime Minister of India. He was also a freedom fighter and a senior leader of the Indian National Congress party.

He was born in Uttar Pradesh on 2 October 1904 as Munshi Lal Bahadur Shastri. Shastri joined the independence movement after being deeply influenced by Mahatma Gandhi and his ideals.

As a PM, Lal Bahadur Shastri led the country during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965. His slogan of Jai Jawan Jai Kisan (Hail the soldier, Hail the farmer) became very popular during the war.

The war formally ended with the Tashkent Agreement on 10 January 1966. However, he died the following day, still in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
