Lok Sabha passes the Triple talaq billThe Lok Sabha has passed the Triple Talaq bill for the second time. It had passed it once already in 2017 but that time, the Rajya Sabha did not approve.

To bring about any new law in India, both legislative houses of the Parliament of India, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha must pass (approve) the bill.

What is Triple talaq?

Triple talaq is a divorce (legally dissolving one's marriage) procedure in Islamic culture, which is followed by Muslims in India.
 	According to this law, any Muslim man can legally divorce his wife just by saying or writing the word "talaq" three times ('Talaq' means 'divorce' in Arabic).

This is a topic that has been discussed a lot and has faced a lot of criticism.

Triple talaq bill:

On 22nd August 2017, the Supreme Court passed a judgement saying triple talaq is unconstitutional (illegal).
 	At the same time, the Supreme Court asked the government to ban the practice by enacting a law.
 	In 2017, the government designed a bill 'The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill".
 	According to this bill, triple talaq said in any form will be illegal which further leads to three years of jail for the husband.
 	The bill was successfully passed by Lok Sabha on 28th December 2017, while Rajya Sabha opposed it.
 	The bill did not become a law as it was not passed by the Rajya Sabha.

So, once again, the Lok Sabha has passed the bill with a strong majority. It is now awaiting the Rajya Sabha's approval.
