First Woman Chairperson of SEBI: Madhabi Puri Buch

On Monday, Madhabi Puri Buch is appointed as the first chairperson of SEBI(Security and Exchange Board of India).

What is SEBI?

Security and Exchange Board of India(SEBI) is the regulatory body for securities and commodity market in India under the ownership of Ministry of Finance.

Madhabi Puri served in SEBI between 2017 and 2021 as a Whole Time Member. She will replace Ajay Tyagi as the new SEBI Chairperson as his term ends on 28th February 2022.

Selection Process for SEBI

The Ministry of Finance had invited applications in October 2021 for the SEBI Chairperson. The deadline for submission of the application was 6th December 2021.

The candidates were shortlisted by the Financial Sector Regulatory Appointments Search Committee (FSRASC) headed by Cabinet Secretary.

Madhabi Puri Buch’s Career

Currently, Madhabi Puri Buch is selected as SEBI  chairperson for three years, initially. She started her career as a Project Analyst at ICICI Bank. She has also served as Chief Executive Officer(CEO) of ICICI Securities(Investment banking arm of the ICICI Group).

After joining SEBI, she has worked as head of various SEBI committees. Madhabi Puri Buch headed an advisory committee previously before being appointed as the Chairperson of SEBI.
