Mexican football fans caused an earthquake in 2018
Recommended for Middle Grades
The last football FIFA World Cup was held in Russia in 2018.
During this tournament, Mexican football fans caused an earthquake while celebrating a win. This was a shock 1-0 win over the defending champions, Germany. This win made fans so happy that they celebrated in the streets of the capital, Ciudad de Mexico. They were singing, dancing, blaring automotive horns, and cheering El Tri (El Tri is a Mexican rock band from Mexico City). They celebrated so much that seismologists (earthquake scientists) announced that they’d detected a high degree of “artificial” rumbling.
Artificial rumblings
During this match, Mexico’s Hirving “Chucky” Lozano smashed home the game-winning goal within the 35th minute. This led to great celebrations in the quake-prone Ciudad de Mexico, leading to an “earthquake of joy”.
“What happened, hey, what happened hey, to the Germany that was going to beat us today?” the crowd chanted.
So, it seems seismologists in Ciudad de Mexico have confirmed that football game fans are actually a force of nature!
Have you also ever celebrated so hard that it caused an earthquake?
