Mission to the Moon – NASA successfully tests the SLS rocket

Recommended for Middle Grades

We are all looking forward to future mission to the Moon. Let’s read about the preparations that are underway.

We read about NASA’s SLS (Space Launch System) rocket before. This rocket is the most powerful rocket that NASA has designed till now.

NASA was able to successfully test this rocket recently. The test took place at NASA’s Stennis Space Center in Mississippi, US. The test lasted for just over eight minutes.

This test was an important milestone (important event) towards the Artemis Mission, which aims to land astronauts on the Moon by 2024.

SLS will be used to launch the Orion spacecraft which will carry astronauts to the Moon and even Mars (in the future). Orion can carry four crew members and support deep-space missions. Older spacecraft were designed only for short flights

Various Artemis missions are being planned to launch astronauts into space before they step on the Moon. They are designed to see how the rocket will perform throughout different stages of launch.

The first mission to the moon, Artemis I, is scheduled for November 2021. But this mission will have no astronauts. Artemis II will be launched in August 2023 and it will fly by around the Moon. Artemis III will be one that will land astronauts on the Moon.
