Recommended for Preparatory Grades

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi reveals a new ensign for the Indian Navy flag. The Cross of St. George is replaced with a brand new Naval Ensign.

Narendra Modi also put INS Vikrant into service.  INS Vikrant is a big step forward in India’s efforts to build a strong and self-sufficient defence industry at home. The warship was built with tools and machinery made in India.

What is the Indian Navy?

The Indian Navy is a defense force that is established to protect India’s sea and other coastal areas.

A naval ensign is a flag that is flown on top of naval warships, on ground stations, at air bases, and in other places where maritime identification is needed.

Indian Navy new ensign!

  • On 2 September India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi revealed a new ensign for the Indian Navy.
  • The Indian naval ensign also goes by the name “Nishaan,” which means “symbol” in English.
  • Nishaan takes its namesake from the legendary Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Emperor of the Marathas.
  • The Prime Minister’s Office says that Nishaan is India’s way of burying its colonial past.
  • Political experts say that people have asked for a long time to make the Naval ensign more Indian.
  • Also, it had to be less of a reminder of India’s colonial past.
