NASA selects three companies to deliver cargo to the moon

NASA selects three companies to deliver cargo to the moonNine companies were competing for NASA’s CLPS programme (Commercial Lunar Payload Services program) to deliver science and research cargo to the moon.

Three companies - Intuitive Machines, Astrobotic and OrbitBeyond were selected by NASA.

What is CLPS?

Commercial Lunar Payload Services program (CLPS) aim to carry science instruments to the lunar surface.
 	The contract is worth 250 million US dollars.

NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) stated that the cargo will include devices that will help map and navigate the lunar surface, measure radiation levels, conduct scientific investigations, and assess how human activity impacts the moon.

When are the three companies expected to start delivery?

Astrobotic and Intuitive plan to launch their first missions to the moon in 2021.
 	Orbit Beyond expects to land on the moon by September 2020.

The OrbitBeyond lander is based on a design developed by Team Indus, an Indian team.
