New ecosystem discovered in Antarctica
Recommended for Secondary Grades
Researchers have recently discovered a new ecosystem below the icy surface of Antarctica. This hidden world is filled with tiny shrimp-like creatures.
Ecosystem under the Antarctic’s icy surface
The new hidden habitat is found beneath the Larsen Ice Shelf. It is attached to the eastern coast of the Antarctic peninsula. The satellite pictures show that there was a movement in the ice shelf where it met the land. The researchers have searched 1,640 feet deep below the ice surface.
The researchers sent a camera across the depth of the icy tunnel, they found tiny creatures in the video. These creatures are known as amphipods. Now, that’s interesting, isn’t it? We’ve found life below the icy surface.
Research beneath Antarctica’s icy surface
The researchers have already suspected a network of rivers and lakes underneath the icy sheet of Antarctica. But, they didn’t know it fully, now, the discovery of amphipods below the surface has confirmed the existence of rivers below Antarctica.
They also discovered that the water below the ice surface also split into distinct layers. Now, that makes it hard to understand the environment.
Scientists will continue to study the new ecosystem and there is hope for new and exciting discoveries below the icy surface of Antarctica.
