New Zealand chooses Hoiho penguin as Bird of the YearEvery year, New Zealand holds an election to choose the ‘Bird of the Year’.

Started in 2005, these elections are very popular today. A number of birds participate and people vote for the bird they like the most.

This year, the Hoiho penguin has won the title of the Bird of the Year.

It is the first penguin and sea bird to win the title.
 	There were total five birds competing - the Kakapo, Banded dotterel, Fantail, Black Robin and Hoiho penguin.
 	12022 people out of 43460 people voted for the Hoiho penguin.
 	A conservation group, Forest & Bird, conducts the contest.

About the Hoiho penguin

The Hoiho penguin is a beautiful bird.
 	It is tall and has a band of light yellow feathers and yellow eyes.
 	It is an anti-social bird. This means the Hoiho penguins do not move around in large groups and are not easy to find or spot. It is one of the rarest penguins in the world.
 	They are usually silent, but they let out a sharp screaming shriek when they want to be heard.
