NDRF, Army and Navy rescue 1050 passengers from stranded trainOn 27th July, a joint operation of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Army and the Navy rescued over a thousand train passengers in Mumbai.

The passengers were stuck in the Mumbai-Kolhapur Mahalaxmi Express near Badlapur.

The Mumbai-Kolhapur Mahalaxmi Express had left Mumbai on 26th July but it got stuck near Badlapur.
 	It got stuck due to the overflowing of the Ulhas river near Badlapur. The water had overflowed onto the train tracks. Heavy overnight rains around the Mumbai area had led to flooding.
 	There were 1,050 passengers on board include nine pregnant women.

The rescue operation lasted over 10 hours.

The rescue operation consisted of seven Navy units, two helicopters of the Indian Air Force, and four Army columns.
 	The operation was monitored by Western Naval Command, Chief Secretary of Maharashtra and Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai.
 	The NDRF teams were the first to reach the site with six inflatable boats at 9:43 AM on 27th July.
 	They rescued the first seven passengers at 10:05 AM.

All the passengers were rescued by 2:00 PM. The railways arranged a special train to carry the rescued passengers to Kolhapur. It departed at 6:10 PM.

Chief Public Relation Officer, Central Railway, Sunil Udasi said that this was a first-of-its-kind evacuation undertaken on this scale in Maharashtra
