Original code for World Web Wide to be sold as NFT

Recommended for Secondary Grades

A few days ago, we read about the invention of the World Wide Web (WWW) and the world’s first website.

Tim Berners-Lee, a British scientist, invented the World Wide Web and the first website. He invented it in 1989 when he was working under CERN. This is the European Organization for Nuclear Research.

Now, Berners-Lee is selling the original (source) code for the World Wide Web as an NFT (non-fungible token). Source code is the set of instructions and statements written to create a computer programme. Programmers write them using a computer programming language

Berners-Lee has made the source code open for the public earlier. But this sale will be for a single edition of his original time-stamped files. The buyer will get the NFT which “certifies” that he/she owns this edition. They will also get a digital poster.

The sale is open from 23 to 30 June 2021. Whoever offers the most money by the end will be able to buy it.

What are NFTs?

A non-fungible item is something that is unique or one-of-a-kind. NFTs can be sold or bought but they are only digital (online). Technically, anything digital could be sold as an NFT.

When you buy an NFT, you get a “token” – a digital certificate that shows you own the NFT.

A record of who owns what NFT is stored on a shared online ledger known as a blockchain. This is maintained by many computers around the world.
