Pingelap Atoll is the Island of the Colourblind

Pingelap Atoll is the Island of the ColourblindPingelap Atoll is an island in the South Pacific ocean. It is also has a very unique nickname - the Island of the Colourblind. This is because 10% of the islanders are completely colourblind.

What is colourblindness?

Human beings have both rod and cone cells in our eyes, which enable us to see colour.
 	The colourblind Pingelap islanders have a genetic condition due to which the cones in their eyes do not work. This means they can see only in black and white! However, some of them say they also see a bit of red and blue.
 	This is a rare condition. Most colourblind people can see colour but cannot distinguish between them.

What is the history behind this?

It is believed that there was a natural disaster on the island and only a few people were left. One of the survivors was carrying this condition which got passed down to his children and so on.

Belgian photographer Sanne De Wilde has created photos that show us how the colourblind islanders see the world (see image above).
