PM Modi launches e-RUPI digital payment system

Recommended for Secondary Grades

On 2 August, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a new digital payment solution called e-RUPI.

The National Payments Corporation of India has developed this instrument.

How does e-RUPI work?

e-RUPI is a cashless and contactless payment system based on QR code or SMS-based e-Voucher. For example, you buy a product and receive a voucher on the purchase. So, with e-RUPI, you do not need to print out the voucher. And you will get the voucher on your mobile phone in the form of a QR code or as an SMS.

What is the purpose of e-RUPI?

The government aims to use the system for government welfare schemes. This digital payment system will transfer benefits to the people through phones. So this will ensure that the benefits reach the ones who should actually get them. Moreover, e-RUPI users will be able to do all this online and it is prepaid too. For now, the government will use the system for vaccination at private centres.

Moreover, other organisations can also use e-RUPI to help people in their medical treatment, education or for any other work. This would ensure that the money they send will be used for the right reasons.

PM Modi said that the e-RUPI voucher was a symbol of how India was progressing by connecting people’s lives with technology.

Growth of digital payment in India

UPI (Unified Payments Interface) payment using apps such as Google Pay, Paytm and PhonePe are increasing a lot in India today. In July, there was a record of 300 crore UPI transactions, amounting to ₹6 lakh crore.
