On 9 November, the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, presented the Padma Awards to recognize outstanding citizens of India.

The Padma Awards are one of the highest civilian awards in the country. They are given for exceptional and distinguished service in any field. The Padma Awards are given in three categories – Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.

Earlier this year, the Union Government announced the list of people who have been selected. But the ceremony was held today.

This year, 119 people received the Padma Awards. 7 people have received the Padma Vibhushan, 10 have received the Padma Bhushan and 102 people got the Padma Shri. 16 of the awards have been conferred posthumously (after the death of the person).

Who are some of the notable recipients of the Padma Awards this year?

Former Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, as well as the late Union Minister Sushma Swaraj, were awarded the Padma Vibhushan.

The late Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan and late Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi are among those who have been awarded the Padma Bhushan.
