Rajya Sabha passes J&K Reorganisation bill 2019

Rajya Sabha passes J&K Reorganisation bill 2019After passing the presidential order to scrap Article 370, the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation bill 2019 got passed in the Rajya Sabha.

The bill will divide the state into two separate union territories of Jammu and Kashmir (with legislature*) and Ladakh (without legislature*).

The bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha with 125 to 61 votes.
 	Political parties including the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supported the bill.
 	Next, the bill will be put to vote in the Lok Sabha.

Major provisions of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation bill 2019

Increase in number of assembly constituencies.
 	Reorganisation of constituencies in J&K.
 	Assembly tenure of 6 years will be reduced to 5 years similar to other states.
 	Added provision for Scheduled Caste/ Scheduled Tribe reservations.

Along with the Reorganisation bill, the  Union Ministry of Home Affairs introduced one more bill and two resolutions regarding Jammu & Kashmir (J&K).

These are as follows:

Constitution (Applicable to Jammu & Kashmir) Order, 2019.
 	Resolution for Repeal of Article 370 of the Constitution of India.
 	Jammu & Kashmir Reservation (2nd Amendment) Bill, 2019.

*with legislature - governed by elected representatives. e.g; Delhi

*without legislature - governed by Lieutenant Governor. e.g; Chandigarh
